Back in the old days when I was a college student, it used to be that you bought your college textbooks from your friendly college bookstore. You had only two choices: either you bought them "new" or you bought them "used". If you bought them new, you paid the full retail price. If you bought them used, you got them for 25% off the retail price. So if a textbook was retailing for $80.00, you paid only $60.00 for the book. Today you have two other choices as far as how you go about buying and, most importantly, saving money on college textbooks. Those two ways are renting and downloading college textbooks.
Renting textbooks is one of the new choices that you have today. Not only does it save trees, but also it can save you a whole lot of money. Sure, buying books used will save you 25% off the retail price. And that is fine and dandy. Good. But renting books can do better than that: It can save you up to 80% off the retail price of a college textbook. Now that is-as Tony the Tiger would bellow out-GRRREEEAAATTTTTTTTTTTT!!!! So if you rented that same textbook that was selling for $80.00, you could have possibly got it for only $36.00. The website to go to in order to rent books is Chegg.com. They plant a tree for every book that is rented from them.
Downloading college textbooks, which also save trees, is the other choice that you have as far as purchasing textbooks today. You have various options. You can download an entire e-book copy of a college textbook for about 50% off the hard copy's retail price. You can download a single chapter of a textbook for as low as $1.99 a chapter. Or, you can download a textbook for FREE. However, your choices might be somewhat limited. You can download entire e-book copies of textbooks at CaféScribe.com. Again, you pay only about half the price of the actual hard copy of that book. You can do the same thing with an Amazon Kindle, which you would have to purchase for $359 if you don't already have one. On the other hand, if you don't want to purchase the entire college textbook, you can download a single chapter at iChapters.com for as low as $1.99. Finally, if you don't want to spend any money on college textbooks-good luck-you can download FREE copies of some college textbooks at Freeloadpress.com. The choices, however, are limited.
These are the new options you have of buying college textbooks today and saving a whole lot of money by doing so.

Renting textbooks is a great new option for students, but beware of the publisher's strategy--publishers send their representatives out to college campuses, and their main hedge against both renting and the sale of used books is to convince instructors to use ancillary materials--online access codes, workbooks, instructor's notes, or other supplies that can't be found anywhere except from the publisher. They bundle these materials into a package and charge higher prices for the pieces if purchased separately. This not only damages the rental business, but also the used book business and textbook buyback.
Surely, renting textbook is a great idea to save on your textbook needs. There are a few great websites offering search rental service. So, parents/ students can always check out those websites for availability.

oh it's much easier and cheaper to buy textbooks today for college than when I last attended(dating myself)
We used to pay an inflated price before the semester began and then bookstore would buy them back for pennies on the dollar!
