4 Things You Can Do to Maintain and Improve Your Health

There are four things you can do to help to keep you on the straight and narrow when it comes to your health. Of course, these four things will not do it alone. However, they will aid in the maintenance of your health. The four things that I am referring to are the following:

  • Make buying healthy food for your house a habit
  • Make healthy eating a habit
  • Make taking a multivitamin a habit
  • Make eating less calories a habit

Make buying healthy food for your house a habit. When you go shopping for groceries, look for healthy food. Get in the habit of buying such food more and more. Try to make sure that at least 95% of what ends up in your shopping cart is healthy for both you and your family. Instead of buying ice cream, buy yogurt. Instead of buying fried chicken, buy salmon. Instead of buying a case of pop, opt for water. Instead of buying enriched white bread, buy 100% whole wheat bread. Instead of buying cookies, donuts, and candies for a treat, opt for fruits. Instead of buying a whole lot pasta, opt for purchasing a whole lot of different vegetables. Put shopping for healthy food for your family on automatic.

Make healthy eating a habit. Whether you are at work, at school, or at home, make a conscious effort to choose the healthy meal over the popular one. Where I work, there are many people who bow down at the altar of McDonald's to get their daily fill. They eat McDonald's for lunch religiously nearly every single day. If you too are guilty of doing this, you are filling yourself up with a daily diet of fat, sugar, and salt day after day, week after week, and year after year. One day there will be a reckoning, and you will find yourself a victim of poor health. Perhaps you are not conscious that you are doing this. Perhaps you have been doing this since high school and never really gave it any thought. Or, perhaps you are saying that everybody is doing this. If so, then it is time for a wake up call: Stop making eating poorly a habit! Reverse the habit and thrive to eat healthy instead. In fact, I would go so far as to recommend to you that you bring your lunch with you anytime that you are away from home. This way YOU control what goes into your body. This way you can choose nutritional meal over a non-nutritional one. The same thing should apply too when you are at home. Eat healthy whenever you can. Now if you started packing your house with healthy food and treats 95% of the time as indicated heretofore-the first line of defense against fat and poor health---you cannot help but to eat healthy most of the time.

Make taking a multivitamin a habit. Let's face it. We are all human. Sometimes we are going to fall off the wagon. I have and still do from time to time. Instead of reaching for the poultry or fish, you choose that Italian sausage. You haven't had one for years and you just have a craving for one now! Also, instead of choosing a high fiber vegetable-laden main dish, you choose the mouthwatering pasta platter that is loaded with a high fat but delicious cream sauce. To round out your meal, you decide that you are going to break down just this one time and have a coke. What's the end result of this meal? Did it fill you up? You bet it did. Did it nourish your body? No! It is here where your habitual taking of a multivitamin comes into play. It insures that you get all the nourishment you need regardless of whether you have chosen to be a bad boy or bad girl that day.

Finally, make eating less calories a day a habit. By doing this, you are training your body both to eat less and to be satisfied with eating less. By doing that, you are keeping diabetes at bay and health within reach. On the other hand, I must warn you that you do not want to eat too little either. To do so may put you at risk of becoming anorexic or someone who has weak bones.

In conclusion, if you want to maintain or improve your health, adopt the four habits mentioned above: Purchase healthy food habitually for your home. Habitually, Eat healthy food. Take a multivitamin religiously, and habitually, consume less calories.

Great tips. Thanks. I like to do most of my grocery shopping around the outter edge of the store. There seems to be more of the "good for you" stuff there.

I'm with you on that. Perimeter shopping is a long standing habit here. I heard it said once that " you should avoid eating things that come out of a crinkly sounding bag, or, was it crunching sounding bag." Well you know what I'm referring too.

Thanks for the good article
